The first of many innovative mobile STEM labs will be traveling across Wyoming, bringing educational opportunities to the Cowboy State’s emerging workforce.
The Wyoming Afterschool Alliance is launching the first TMC Mobile Lab on Monday, January 14 from 3:30-5:00pm at the Boys and Girls Club of Carbon County, 725 East Brooks, Rawlins, WY 82301.
Learn about Think Make Create (TMC) Mobile Labs at this first official unveiling! The "labs" are 6 x 12-foot trailers that can easily be transported for use at afterschool program sites and community-based learning sites. The interior of the trailer is specifically designed to maximize storage of supplies and projects. Designed for children and youth K-12, the TMC Mobile Lab materials will be rolled out of the trailer and be accessible on a blacktop, gymnasium, libraries, and other suitable locations.
WYAA Director Linda Barton commented, “Carbon County was perfectly positioned to be the first community in Wyoming to take advantage of this opportunity because of the strong working relationship between afterschool programs and the community – including industry, the school district, and higher education.”
AT&T Mountain Region provided the seed money for the project and Sinclair Oil Corporation became involved when representatives saw the opportunity to share valuable skills with youth in the community. Carbon County Boys & Girls Club, Carbon County School District #1, and Carbon County Higher Education Center have collaborated to bring the opportunity to life. Representatives from the participating organizations will discuss the project and provide a tour during the launch in Rawlins. Community members are encouraged to attend to learn about the collaboration, tour the lab, and enjoy refreshments.
Carbon County’s TMC Mobile Lab is expected to be the first of many that will be traveling on the rural highways of the state and providing invaluable opportunities to students in even the smallest communities. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) subjects are vital 21st Century skills and WYAA is using the TMC Mobile Labs to ensure that students are connected to facilities that will help them explore these subjects.
